Even if you did nothing wrong, never make a confession or other statement, or agree to a search of your home, business or car without first consulting a lawyer. Statements concerning a crime given freely and voluntarily by you or consenting to a search, makes evidence the police uncover admissible against you in court.   By giving your consent, you are building a case against yourself.  Many innocent people are in prison because they made statements to the police that were later used against them.

Often the police lack evidence of a crime but, through questioning a suspect and getting him to make statements, or agreeing to a search, the very evidence they need to convict falls into their hands. Therefore, anyone under arrest should insist on their right to speak to an attorney immediately and to cease all questioning until they have a chance to speak to an attorney.
